POEM: UNDERSTANDING – A BRIDGE THAT LASTS 7/29/06

Rending hearts as thoughts are spun
Are timeless treasures one by one.
Refusing to quit and yet letting go
Standing so tall while bending so low.

Holding on with open palm,
Hearts are willing, given calm.
Sometimes magnets push away
Sometimes they are glued to stay.

All truth is poled between two tensions
Without each side there is no suspension.
A bridge not stretched is no bridge at all.
Spanning generations heed the call.

To carry the weak ones on its back.
Advancing armies find no lack.
All because the bridge held together
Through hot and cold, all kinds of weather.

Out of willingness two hearts do share
Groping in the dark to see what is there.
Through tension and trial, they become taunt.
With loving forgiveness, they are not staunch.

Reaching out to understand the other side
Brings peace, assurance and grace to abide.
Four ears to listen while life is exchanged
Two hearts to receive as lives rearrange.

The bridge is stronger through time passing
It’s committed, fortified and lasting.
This is the strength to give understanding.
When pummeled in a storm, to grant safe landing.

Prov 2:11 NKJV
Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you.
