GOD DWELLS IN THE GROSS DARKNESS  7/01/09

Today, I did a scriptural study on the word “gross darkness” from the famous Isa 60 scripture.

Isa 60:2-3  KJV

For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross (#6205) darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Much of the prophetic realm have quoted this for years as an end time environment in which the world will be in gross darkness, and the church will dwell in God’s light.  I discovered there are several scriptures in the OT using this same Hebrew word for gross darkness and it helped me to understand that GOD HIMSELF dwells in the gross darkness and so there is nothing to fear if we are surrounded by darkness on every side.

GROSS DARKNESS

`araphel

OT:6205 `araphel (ar-aw-fel'); probably from OT:6201; gloom (as of a lowering sky):

KJV - (gross, thick) dark (cloud, -ness).

`araph

OT:6201 `araph (aw-raf'); a primitive root; to droop; hence, to drip:

KJV - drop (down).

Ex 20:19-21

And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.  20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.  21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness (#6205) where God was.  KJV

Deut 4:11-12  NKJV

"Then you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire to the midst of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness. (#6205) 12 And the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; you only heard a voice.  NKJV

Deut 5:22  22 These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, (#6205) with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.  KJV

1 Kings 8:12

Then spake Solomon, The LORD said that he would dwell in thick darkness.  (#6205)

Ps 18:9-14  NKJV

He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet.   10 And He rode upon a cherub, and flew; He flew upon the wings of the wind.   11 He made darkness (#6205) His secret place; His canopy around Him was dark waters And thick clouds of the skies.   12 From the brightness before Him, His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire.   13 The LORD thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice, Hailstones and coals of fire.     14 He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe, Lightnings in abundance, and He vanquished them.   NKJV

Ps 97:2-4  NKJV

Clouds and darkness (#6205) surround Him; Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.   3 A fire goes before Him, And burns up His enemies round about.   4 His lightnings light the world; The earth sees and trembles.   NKJV

Joel 2:2-11

A day of darkness (#6205) and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?  KJV

Zeph 1:14-16

The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.  15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness (#6205) and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,  16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

This study brought into memory of when the same cloud brought darkness to those on the Egyptian camp and light to those in the camp of Israel.  This verse uses a different Hebrew word and was not gross darkness, but it helped me to see the idea of how God does dwell in both the darkness and the light.

Ex 14:19-20 NKJV

And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel . Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.

DARKNESS

OT:2822

OT:2822 choshek (kho-shek'); from OT:2821; the dark; hence (literally) darkness; figuratively, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness:

KJV - dark (-ness), night, obscurity.

OT:2821

OT:2821 chashak (khaw-shak'); a primitive root; to be dark (as withholding light); transitively, to darken:

KJV - be black, be (make) dark, darken, cause darkness, be dim, hide.

GAVE LIGHT

OT:215

OT:215 'owr (ore); a primitive root; to be (causative, make) luminous (literally and metaphorically):

KJV -  break of day, glorious, kindle, (be, en-, give, show) light (-en, -ened), set on fire, shine.

WORD TO PONDER:  I DWELL IN THE DARKNESS AND THE LIGHT  7/01/09
Where sin abounds, My grace does that much more abound.  Beloved, do not fear the gross darkness that prevails upon the world.  Dark and light are the same to Me, you will never walk in a place where I AM not already there.  I will never, never forsake you beloved one.  Never.

Darkness never snuffs out the Light, it is always the other way around.  Light causes darkness to flee, darkness does not cause light to flee.  As you walk with Me, honor My ways and Word, you dwell in My Light.  Do not give up your stand or flee when facing darkness!  Call upon My Name, The Lord Jesus Christ and watch My light pierce and scatter the gross forebodings.

Ps 139:7-12  NKJV

Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.  If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.

If I say, "Surely the darkness shall fall on me," Even the night shall be light about me;  Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You.
